XXC vs Lord Stanley

This is eating me alive. My beloved Pittsburgh Penguins are down 2-0 in this year's Stanley Cup final, but I'm sure they will pull out at least one victory in the next two games which will be played Tuesday and Thursday of this week. If they do win one of those two, then Saturday will be game five of the best-of-seven series. If I were to race the XXC at Massanutten next Sunday, I'd have to camp out Saturday night in order to be at the start line at 9am. Otherwise, the two-hour drive from Roanoke to Massanutten would have an A.I.S. time of 6am. (A.I.S. = ass in seat). I don't think I could get up at 5am, get everything packed and hit the road for two hours, then be at all competitive in a 40 mile XXC.

So kids, if the Pens get swept I'll be camping out Saturday and ready for the XXC start Sunday. If they make it two game five, I will be parked in front of my TV Saturday night and skipping the XXC at Massanutten.

Why? The Penguins' first season in my hometown of Pittsburgh was the year I was born: 1968. In those forty years, most of which I have been a fan, they have made it the finals four times. What if this is the last time they ever make it to the finals? It could happen, ya know. The Washington Capitals came into the league and have never won the cup. Ditto for the St. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres.

So you see, us hockey fans are different. We're rabid. Ain't no way I'm missing the chance to see someone lift the cup.

You can plan on racing Sunday. It will be over on Thursday!
